What is the National School Lunch Program?
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program offered by the USDA. This program is designed to provide nutritious, well-balanced meals to school-aged children. Participating schools receive reimbursement for qualifying meals that are served. USDA offers additional programs to support breakfast and snacks served in schools, as well as meals and snacks served in child and adult care centers.
More information about these programs can be found on USDA website or MDE website.
What’s included in qualifying meal for NSLP?
USDA meal patterns are a reflection of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate, therefore meals must include at least three of the following:
Meat/Meat Alternative
Grain
Vegetable
Fruit
Milk (fat free or 1%)
Note: These components combinations differ for breakfast and snacks offered, as well as child and adult care center offerings.
